I am a potter based in an historic hamlet just south of Winchester. My studio is in an old barn overlooking farmland. I am inspired by the landscape around me, the open skies of the countryside and the dramatic Jurassic coast (I grew up in Dorset).
Most of my work is thrown on the wheel using stoneware clay and porcelain. I create functional ware such as mugs, bowls, plates and vases and enjoy using different layers of glaze along with fluxes to create unique flows of blue and green, reminiscent of the dramatic sea and sky.
Having struggled with science at school I now have an appreciation of the chemistry behind a glaze. Pots are fired in oxidation at around 1200C, having first been through a bisque firing of 1000C.
I also make monochrome pieces either using a black stoneware clay and a white slip or black and white porcelain. This enables me to concentrate on shape and form. These pieces are hand-thrown or hand-built, or a combination of both.
I am a member of the Southern Ceramic Group.
