Julie Weir

Wildlife Artist

I am a wildlife artist working across a range of mediums, from
watercolour to ceramics. My approach to watercolour is a little
unconventional – I love using the tiniest of brushes to build layers
of fine detail, especially in the fur of the animals I paint. I often
pair this with graphite to create a striking contrast in tone and
texture.

Ceramics found me later in life. After years of being surrounded
by artists and ceramicists, I realised I was a ceramicist quietly
waiting inside a watercolourists body. Nature is my constant
source of inspiration, particularly the landscapes and wildlife of
the South Downs. I’m drawn to the tactile process of shaping
stoneware clay into flowers, seed heads, and the mystical,
characterful forms of hares. Every piece is hand-built, then
finished with glazes and oxides to bring depth, colour, and
texture.

Teaching is my natural environment. From my home studio in
Fareham, I teach watercolour, acrylic ink, and ceramics,
encouraging the curious and helping those who want to try but
arent sure where to begin. My philosophy is simple: I came to
ceramics later in life – and so can you.
